Dr. David Sogin, UK School of Music professor and director of New Horizons Music, recently was presented a prestigious award for his research work in string education and/or performance over the years.

The American String Teachers Association presented the String Researcher Award to Dr. Sogin at its late February meeting in Providence, RI. Dr. Sogin is only the second person to receive this award. According to the ASTA, ”this award is given every two years to recognize a researcher whose work has contributed significantly to scholarship in string education and/or performance.

“The award honors long-term achievement in research. The nominees should have a record of sustained engagement (at least 10 years in the following research activities: publication in juried research journals, professional services in string research, and support (mentoring, collaboration, supevision) of other string researchers.”

Dr. Sogin and Dr. Christine Carucci founded New Horizons Music in 2007 under the auspices of the UK School of Music. Starting with one band of about 10 members, NHB music now has a concert band, jazz band, and string orchestra involving more than 50 members.

“A Winter Concert,” presented Dec. 8 by Lexington New Horizons Music — the largest and the longest concert in its five-year history — featured the Concert Band, the Jazz Band , and introduced two important new developments: First, the debut of the Lexington New Horizons String Orchestra; and second, the presentation of the “Louis Dubilier Community Music Service Award.”

Concert Band

Under the direction of Dr. Christine Carucci, the Concert Band kicked off the concert with the following selections: ”Broadway One-Step,” by K. King, arr. J. Poynter; “The Four Seasons,” by A. Vivaldi, arr. J. Stout; “Thunder and Blazes,” by J. Fucic, arr. R. Foster, Daniel Johnson, Conductor; “Red River Valley,” traditional, arr. P. LaPlante, Greg Springer, Conductor; “76 Trombones,” by M. Wilson, arr. L. Anderson, adapted by J. Bocock;” “Salute to the Cinema,” arr. C. Strommen.

String Orchestra

The 15-member String Orchestra — consisting of violins, violas, cellos, and bass — made its debut under the direction of Dr. David Sogin, director of music education at the University of Kentucky and our UK NH Music director. The Orchestra received enthusiastic support from the audience after playing, “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star;” “French Folk Song;” and, “”Lightly Row,” all traditional songs.

Saxophone Quartet

In memory of Lou Dublier, baritone saxophone, who passed away in May, 2012, the Lexington New Horizons Saxophone Quartet (B. Dandeneau and S. Waxman (alto), D. Dandeneau (tenor), (J. Carucci, baritone), played “All of Me,” by G. Marks and S. Simons.

Presentation of the “Louis Dubilier Community Music Service Award”

Dr. Louis “Lou” Dubilier” was a saxophonist par excellance, who played all saxophones in the bands, but especially the baritone, and helped many to improve. Lou passed away in May, and his obituary appeared earlier in this web log. In announcing this new award, Dr. David Sogin said:

Louis Dubilier was a scientist, physician and a musician. We lost Lou earlier this year but not to his memory or what he meant to the core beliefs of this group and more importantly to the band members who knew him. Lou embodied the qualities that are essential to making this group work, a true love of music, leadership, and service.

In consultation with Drs. Christine and Joe Carucci and with Vera Dubilier, Lou’s wonderful bride the University of Kentucky New Horizons Groups established the “Louis Dubilier Community Music Service Award.” This award would be given yearly to an individual in the band that demonstrated those three qualities of love of music, leadership, and service.

We are very proud to present the first Louis Dubilier Community Music Service Award to Richard “Dick” Dandeneau. He is a founding member who also embodies the love of music, leadership, and service. He started playing the sax six years ago — at the age of 82. He has been the public face of this band many times and has served the band in various capacities particularly in publicity.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band, under the direction of Dr. Joe Carucci, wound up the concert in rousing fashion with “Leap Frog” by J. Garland, arr. P.
